The last time I made a significant change to my hair before this recent experience was back in April 2015. Yes, it had been a long 18 months without a proper haircut, just the occasional trim to tidy my fringe. I can admit it—I've been neglectful, to say the least.
As many of you know, I’m not a natural redhead. I've been dyeing my hair for the last six years, reapplying every 3-6 weeks. After years of home coloring, my hair was clearly showing signs of wear and tear. By early December, I found myself sitting on my bedroom floor, staring into the mirror, brush in hand, and contemplating the state of my damaged locks.
The Consequences of Hair Neglect
My serious lack of proper haircuts had led to a disturbing amount of damage. My hair became almost elastic when wet, stretching and breaking easily. Every time I washed or styled it, I’d find clumps of hair gathering in my brush. It was disheartening to watch my hair deteriorate, and I knew I had been pushing my luck by ignoring its condition for so long.
Fast forward to Autumn 2016, when I finally decided enough was enough. I went into full-on decluttering mode, not just with my belongings but with my entire look. My hair needed a drastic intervention, and I couldn't delay it any longer.
A Cry for Help
In my desperation, I reached out for assistance. I sent an SOS tweet, hoping someone could point me in the right direction. My hair was in crisis, and I needed a knight in shining armor to rescue me from my self-inflicted damage.
While waiting for help, I began to reflect on my journey from natural brunette to redhead. I even created a vlog to document the evolution of my hair color—trust me, there have been a lot of shades along the way. Looking back through six years of my blog archive was a surprisingly nostalgic experience. It wasn’t just about the color changes; the process brought back so many great memories from different phases of my life.
Repairing the Damage
As part of my hair revival, I decided to try some professional hair care products. I tested several products from the Schwarzkopf Professional line, including their Fibreplex and BC BonaCure ranges. These products are specifically designed to repair and protect dry, damaged hair. Fibreplex works by strengthening the hair’s structure, while BonaCure helps restore moisture and shine to lifeless strands.
The difference was noticeable. While it didn’t magically transform my hair overnight, these products made a substantial improvement in the texture and manageability of my hair. My hair felt less brittle and looked healthier after just a few weeks of use.
Reflecting on the Journey
Looking back on this experience, it’s clear that hair care is more than just about appearance—it's about self-care. Letting my hair fall into such disrepair reflected a broader pattern of not prioritizing my well-being. Getting my hair back into shape has been an empowering process, reminding me to take time for myself and address things before they spiral out of control.

I’ve poured my heart into it, sharing not only the ups and downs of my hair care routine but also some of the memories and milestones that came with it. It’s been a real trip down memory lane.
