Bone-conduction hearing aids are a type of hearing aid which transmits sound to the inner ear by vibration of the skull bone. Different types of bone-conduction hearing aids are available in the market which is broadly divided into two types i.e. surgically implantable bone-conduction hearing aids and Non-surgical bone-conduction hearing aids. BAHA is a type of surgically implantable bone-conduction hearing aid.
HOW BAHA WORK?
BAHA works on the principle of transmission of sound via bone conduction by vibrating the skull bone to transmit sound to the inner ear. The sound processor has a microphone capturing the sound which is amplified and transferred to the Osseo integrated implant which vibrates the skull bone transmitting the sound to the inner ear where it creates a pressure difference stimulating the cochlea.
INDICATIONS OF BAHA
BAHA is indicated in patients with congenital disorders like Anotia/Microtia, post-radical mastoid surgery, extremely narrow ear canals and recurrent otitis externa where conventional hearing aids are not suitable. In patients with chronic discharging ear-like chronic supportive otitis media, disease of ear ossicles, suffering from unilateral mixed hearing loss. Also, in people with Single-sided deafness.
COMPONENTS OF BAHA
BAHA comprises a Titanium Osseo integrated implant anchored to the bone which vibrates the bone for bone conduction of sound. An Abutment is fixed to the implant which facilitates the attachment of the sound processor. The abutment can be of skin penetrating type or of magnetic type which lies under the skin. And last component is the Sound processor which comprises of microphone, amplifier and vibrator system.
COMPONENTS OF BAHA
BAHA is contraindicated in children below the age of 5 years. In people with bone disease making fixation of implants difficult, with mental retardation, emotional instability, prone to skin infection and allergic to the material of the implant. In patients with pure tone audiometry threshold is worse than 65dB HL.
BENEFITS OF BAHA
BAHA provides better comfort and experience as unlike traditional hearing aids you do not need to put anything into the ear which increases compliance with the device. You can try the Non-surgical BAHA to take the experience to notice improvement and can opt for Surgical BAHA thereafter.
COMPLICATION OF BAHA
Complications of BAHA include skin infection, and skin necrosis due to the presence of the foreign body in contact with the skin of the scalp. Defective Osseo integration can lead to fixture loss, and hypertrophic scar formation can occur.
