Once there was a dove
In a cage petite and tall
The bars were all golden
But the space way too small
I asked the dove
Why do you stay?
The cage is open
You could fly away
But the dove looked at me
And said it felt safe
That it wanted to wait
Til the fear went away
Days go by
And even some years
I watch and wait
And grow with cheer
I loved this bird
For it was much like me
Docile in heart
And waiting to be free
But one day came
When she was ready to fly
But I tell her don't go
Or I'd surely cry
She tells me she must
The time has come
She thanked me for loving
And told me to run
Confused and startled
I looked to my right
A shadow would leer
Like evil from the night
And I realized it's coming
From inside my head
It's coming, It's coming
The dove had said
The doves flies off
And now gone so far
As I watch, I find myself
In the golden bars
