Everyone cuts their skin, and some cuts are deeper than others. That's why many kids need stitches at some point—usually on the face, chin, hands, or feet.
Scratches do not require stitches. Stitches are put into the deepest cuts that are unlikely to close and heal on their own. For example, you can fall, hit something or stick something sharp, like the corner of a piece of furniture - what damage! Or they may need to operate on you and make an incision, a cut made by a surgeon (a doctor who specializes in doing operations).
That's where points come into the picture. The stitches join the two margins (edges) of the cut so that the cut can be closed and healed. monofilament polyamide suture, you don't have to worry, but you will need to take care of your stitches until the wound heals.
What are stitches?
Doctors use the stitches to sew up the two sides of the wound. It is like sewing two pieces of fabric, except that what is sewn are the layers of fabric affected by the cut and a special thread is used. And, after a few days, the skin heals and the stitches are either removed or absorbed on their own.
After joining the two margins of the wound, the doctor makes a knot with the thread so that they remain united until the wound heals. Doctors can use many different types of threads, called sutures, such as nylon, silk, and vicryl.
This last type of thread dissolves into the skin, so there is no need to remove the stitches. This type of suture is used mainly in cuts that affect the lips or the inside of the mouth.
Another way to close a cut is to use glue - glue! Sometimes, if the cut isn't too long or wide, doctors use a special skin cement to hold the wound margins together until the wound heals. Usually the cement falls off on its own after 5 to 10 days.
Another option to close small cuts is with self-adhesive strips on the so-called butterfly bandage . It holds the cut edges together for a few days and often falls off during bathing.
Why do children need stitches?
Children need stitches when they get a cut that would not close and heal on its own. It can happen to you if you hit or fall on a rock, glass, ledge or sharp corner. If they operate on you, they will also have to put stitches on you.
