A telecoil is a small coil located inside your hearing aids. The coil works as a tiny receiver that picks up signals from a loop system that acts as an electromagnetic field. It then converts the electromagnetic field into a sound signal that then streams into your hearing aids. A telecoil is also known as a T-switch or T-coil.
How It Works
If a hearing aid is equipped with a telecoil, the wearer can hear the sound directly into the hearing aids. Hearing aid microphones are designed to pick up sounds, but the wearer needs to tune into one thing once in a while. Telecoil connectivity makes this possible. When you link it up with a sound system in a theatre, you get amplified sound delivered directly into your hearing aids. Using a telecoil with a loop system can improve the sound quality in situations with a lot of background noise.
How To Turn on The Telecoil In Your Hearing Aid?
If your hearing aid has a telecoil built into it, your hearing professional can activate it during your first fitting. They can also customise it to suit your preferences.
Other hearing aids require you to push a button or a switch to select the feature. Advanced hearing aids will automatically switch to a T-coil setting when a telecoil signal is detected in the environment.
Where Is Telecoil Connectivity Used?
Loop system
Telecoil can be used whenever a loop system is installed. When activated in the hearing aid, sound sent through the loop system is amplified while background noise is shut out. Loop systems can be found in churches, universities and concert halls.
Telephone
Telecoil connectivity comes in handy when you are using your phone to receive a call. It allows direct communication from the phone to the hearing aid. This makes conversations clear.
Do All Hearing Aids Have Telecoils?
Most hearing aids have the option available. However, completely-in-canal and invisible-in-canal hearing aids do not have telecoils due to their small size. A hearing professional will know what type of hearing aid is right for you.
