To Whom We Owe Remembering
The Scoffer said, ῞The war is done;
The dead are dead, the battles won,
More wounds are healed with each new sun;
We must forego remembering.῞
The Thinker said, ῞Althoʹ the sod
Is bloodless now, the hand of God,
Pulls life eternal from the clod,
That we might know remembering.῝
Beneath the quiet roots of grass,
In frail decay and bits of brass,
Lie men who call us as we pass,
To whom we owe remembering,
We owe recall of death they braved,
The sacrifice of thousands graved.
We pledge the nation that they saved,
Should live and grow, remembering.
