Key West Family Itinerary: With Christmas over, we were ready to ring in the New Year anywhere fun, and as you know, our beloved Key West: there's no better place to relax and unwind. Two years ago, during the pandemic, we wanted to unwind and get together with family members for a laugh before the kids started school after winter. My company no longer closes the week between Christmas and New Year's, so we decided to take a trip the first week of January, and now it's one of my favorite times to escape the cold. We decided we love these January days to unwind. During this time together, we talked about what we wanted to do in the new year, where we wanted to go, and what we needed to do next. It's now something I look forward to all year, so perhaps consider organizing a family Key West itinerary to kick off the new year. We flew American Airlines from RDU at 12:30 p.m. on December 31. It was a beautiful day to travel; there were very few people in the sky on the last day of the year. We arrived at the airport and it was empty. We went through the TSA pre-screening area and were the only ones in the entire security checkpoint, including the standard line. It was a wonderful way to start our winter vacation. We had a layover in Charlotte, and upon landing, the flight attendant announced it was the last flight of the year from RDU to CLT. We made it through several gates and boarded our flight to Key West International Airport (EYW) in 5 minutes. We boarded, placed our bags in the overhead compartments, and were soon embarking on stunning Key West. Our kids feel like this is their second trip and know all the ins and outs of the trips, making it easy to travel to our favorite region in the world. We hopped in our rental car (not always essential if you're staying in Key West, but my husband insists on having a car wherever he goes). We drove thousands of dollars to Opal Cay (check availability), one of my favorite accommodations and one you should include in your Key West family itinerary. We've stayed at many hotels in the Keys, and for me, Opal (check availability) is my first choice if I'm staying in Key West. It's oceanfront and centrally located.
