Saia Motor Freight Overview
Saia freight was founded in 1924 by Louis Saia, Senior., who was a produce dealer from Houma, Louisiana. He realized very early that selling produce rather than retailing it was more profitable. Over the next 45 years, Saia expanded its operations by opening new terminals in Texas and Louisiana.
Saia was one of the nation's most successful regional LTL (Less Than Truckload) transporters by 1986. It had 23 terminals in five Southeastern States, approximately 1000 employees, and more than $50 million in sales. In 1987, Preston Trucking purchased the company from the Saia family. Yellow Corporation acquired Preston in 1993.
Clark Brothers Transport, Inc. joined Saia's network in 2004, which has a presence in nine states and has 16 terminal systems. It offered support to customers in critical Midwestern cities like Chicago, Kansas City, and Minneapolis.
Saia's capabilities were expanded beyond LTL with the 2012 acquisition of The Robart Companies. Saia purchased LinkEx Inc. in 2015, a 3PL company that offers a variety of services in Dallas, Texas.
Saia currently employs more than 10,500 people and operates 169 terminals across the country. Moreover, it serves in Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Canada, and Mexico through its network partners. Saia Logistics Services and LinkEx are two of the company's main service divisions. They offer complete freight and distribution solutions.
