CAREER

I read recently that a person will change jobs an average of 10 to 15 times in his or her lifetime. Nowadays, many workers are spending five years or less before moving on, with the trend showing less job migration as a person ages. I’d like to think the reason is because we finally find the right fit as the years pass, yet I meet so many folks in my age bracket who have settled into jobs they dislike, working for the sake of a paycheck, or a pension, or the chance of a promotion to a job they may end up disliking just as much.
The same predicament could have easily befallen me, had serendipity not intervened in the form of a lay-off from a previous employer. The resultant career move came with a job description ranging from driving a courier van in the sunshine, to running a print shop, to working in Fire Rescue administration. Seven years has seen me move between 15 different departments on varying assignments. So essentially, I make up part of that average mentioned earlier – I just do it, very fortunately, with one great employer.
