The austenitic stainless steel 310 type has a medium carbon content. About 25% chromium and 20% nickel are the main alloying components used in stainless steel 310 fasteners. Fasteners become significantly more oxidation and corrosion-resistant after the inclusion of these two elements.
UNS S31000 fasteners are resistant to corrosion and stress cracking in conditions that contain sulfur or hydrogen sulfide. These fasteners are usually found in environments that are moderately carburizing, like petrochemical industries. In high-temperature applications like furnace parts and heat treatment machinery, 310 ss fasteners are used. Stainless steel of the 310 grade can withstand constant use up to 1150°C and intermittent use up to 1035°C.
A low-carbon variation, also known as grade 310S, is commercially available and has a maximum carbon content of 0.08%. Generally, 310-grade stainless steel has a maximum carbon content of about 0.25%. Due to the alloy's reduced carbon content compared to other alloys, alloy 310S fasteners are simple to produce.
