Millions of people are infertile, with some having a low sperm count and/or abnormal production. Continue reading to find out how you can increase male fertility.
If you and your partner are having fertility problems, know that you are not alone. Every year, more than 6 million people have difficulty conceiving, and the number is growing. Infertility is a fairly common problem. It affects people of all ages, races, income levels, and genders. However, if you are suffering from male infertility, which is usually caused by a low sperm count and/or abnormal sperm production, there are things you can do to improve your fertility. There are ways to increase your chances of conception.
1. Consume More Folate-Rich Foods
Folic acid is not only beneficial to pregnant women; both partners can benefit from this vitamin. According to one study from the University of California, Berkeley, those who ate less folic acid had a higher rate of abnormal chromosomes in their sperm. Miscarriage or birth defects can occur when sperm with abnormal chromosomes fertilizes an egg. (Chromosome abnormalities in the embryo cause more than half of the first-trimester miscarriages.)
2. Get Enough Rest
Researchers at Aarhus University in Denmark linked earlier bedtimes to better sperm quality in a 2019 study. Going to bed before 10:30 p.m. appears to be the key. The researchers also discovered a link between adequate sleep (between seven and a half and eight hours per night) and improved fertility.
3. Start Using a Male Fertility Supplement.
Because it takes two to make an embryo, both parties should consider taking prenatal supplements. Start taking these supplements six months before conception to ensure that sperm is strong, healthy, mobile, and less clumpy, according to Sherry Ross, M.D., Ob-Gyn, and author of She-ology: The Definitive Guide to Women's Intimate Health. These vitamins, according to her, should include B12, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Zinc, and Selenium. "Zinc aids in the maintenance of normal testosterone levels. Selenium has been shown to lower the risk of birth defects and improve sperm count. Being your healthiest self while trying to conceive with your partner has no drawbacks."
4. Stop Smoking to Increase Sperm Mobility
Cigarette smoking can result in low sperm counts and slow-moving sperm, which adds another reason to the "why quit" column of your comparative report. Stop smoking three months before trying to conceive. "Changes you make today will not show up in the semen for at least three months," says Suzanne Kavic, M.D., director of the division of reproductive endocrinology at Loyola University Health System. You should also avoid marijuana and other illegal drugs because they can harm sperm. Miscarriage is also more likely when partners use recreational drugs such as cocaine, marijuana, or any of the other common amphetamines.
5. Stop your alcohol consumption to avoid sperm abnormalities.
You have to completely abstain from alcohol, it's a good idea to abstain from alcohol consumption if you're trying to conceive. It has been demonstrated that alcohol reduces sperm production and causes sperm abnormalities. According to Dr. Kavic alcohol consumption badly affects sperm production. Dr. Kavic adds that it can also have an effect on your sexual performance.
