Halloween and reading—two of my absolute favorite things—are combined in this delightful and free "Read More BOOks" SVG cut file! This playful design is perfect for anyone who enjoys spooky season and loves getting lost in a good book. I couldn’t resist making a Halloween-themed shirt with it, and I’m excited to share the process with you. Whether you're a Cricut pro or just starting, this tutorial will guide you through creating your own customized Halloween shirt and other festive items like mugs, signs, and more!
Personal Use Only: Guidelines for Using Artsy-Fartsy Mama Designs
Before diving into the crafting process, it's essential to note that printables and cut files from Artsy-Fartsy Mama are intended for personal use only. Feel free to use these files to create personal projects such as shirts, totes, or home décor. However, selling items made from these designs is not allowed. If you want to share this project with friends, please link back to the original post or website rather than directly sharing the file.
Uploading and Customizing the "Read More BOOks" Cut File
To get started, upload the "Read More BOOks" SVG file into your Cricut Design Space. Once it's loaded, resize the design to fit your chosen project, like a shirt, mug, or tote bag. You can also get creative with the design by experimenting with Halloween-themed colors like orange, black, purple, or even add some sparkle by using glitter heat transfer vinyl (HTV).
For an added personal touch, you can break the design into different color sections. In Cricut Design Space, select the parts of the design that you want to be the same color and use the "Attach" function in the bottom right menu. This step ensures that the design stays properly aligned while cutting, as Cricut otherwise arranges pieces to optimize the mat space, which can throw off your design.
Preparing the Vinyl and Cutting the Design
Before cutting, make sure to "Mirror" your image in Design Space—this step is crucial for iron-on projects. To mirror the design, click on the mat thumbnail and toggle the "Mirror" switch. This ensures that when you apply the vinyl to the shirt, the text and images will be correctly aligned.
For my project, I used black, white, gray, purple, and pink HTV with my Cricut Explore Air 2. You can also use this opportunity to use up smaller scraps of vinyl for parts like the tongue, book pages, or book cover. Place the vinyl face-down on the cutting mat, set the material settings based on the type of vinyl you're using, and press the "Go" button to cut the design.
Weeding the Design and Preparing for Application
Once the vinyl is cut, it's time to "weed" the design—this means removing any excess vinyl that isn't part of your design. Start by peeling away the outer edges of the vinyl, working from the corners. Then, use weeding tools to remove the smaller, intricate parts of the design, ensuring that all unnecessary pieces are removed.
Applying the Design with EasyPress 2
Now that your vinyl is ready, it’s time to apply it to your shirt (or any other fabric item you're decorating). Plug in your EasyPress 2 and set it to the correct heat and time settings based on the type of HTV you're using. These settings can vary, so check the manufacturer's recommendations for best results.
Once the EasyPress is heated up, place your shirt on the EasyPress Mat and preheat the area for 5-10 seconds. Lay the HTV design onto your shirt, ensuring that the clear carrier sheet is facing up. Position the EasyPress on top of the vinyl, press the green "C" button, and apply firm pressure while the timer counts down.
After pressing the front, flip the shirt over and apply heat to the back for an additional 15 seconds to ensure a strong bond.
Final Steps: Peeling and Layering Vinyl
After pressing, carefully peel off the clear carrier sheet while the vinyl is still warm. If your design involves layering multiple colors of vinyl, repeat the process for each color. Be sure to protect the already-applied vinyl by covering it with an Iron-On Protective Sheet to prevent damage during additional pressing.
