You will have a few different options available to you when you decide to stay at your current apartment and the lease is about to end. Your landlord will often want you to stick around, especially if you were a good tenant, because it means that they will be able to continue their steady stream of income and they will not have to worry about finding a new tenant to take over the space. You do have two options during this time, to renew the lease or to extend the lease. You and your landlord can negotiate on which one makes the most sense for your needs.
If you choose to extend the lease, it means that you plan to stay in the apartment for longer and you will stay put as well. But it is going to be for less time than what you would see with a full-term lease. This is a good option if you only plan to stay put for a little bit longer and you do not want to go with a commitment that is up to a year. You may choose to extend your lease for a few reasons, rather than renew, including:
# You are uncertain about your job and whether you will need to make a transfer.
# You are worried about some of your finances and how those are going to affect you long-term.
# You are worried that there will be some big personal life changes that come up in the future.
# Your landlord is not able to offer a full lease term if they plan to sell the property or there will be some extensive renovations that happen to the building so you can’t stay there.
This will basically turn your lease into a month to month type of arrangement, where both you and the landlord are able to decide to end the relationship at any time. You may want to look for another place to stay, especially if you know that some big changes will come soon.
Bringing in a roommate can help you get the best when it comes to space, style, and affordability.
