If Emily Post were alive today she would probably be so appalled she would pen an entire book on the dos and don’ts of technology usage.
Cell phones were just coming of age when my children were still young. If I could have predicted what the world would look like when the kids caught up – an entire generation of young people with their heads down – I might have added a few items to the list of fundamental life lessons I was trying to impart to them.
I would have told them that phone etiquette doesn’t simply involve making eye contact with another person over their cell phones. And that having a real life conversation with someone should involve being fully present – not texting them from across the room. I am guilty of this myself sometimes, but aside from the occasional reminder about texting at the dinner table, we all do pretty well nowadays…well, most of the time…ok, some of the time.
I guess maybe it's time we put our phones down for a moment and go back to the basics. And if we need to Google “basic manners”, a good start will be by searching "Emily Post".
