What factors should I consider when choosing between a level 2 and level 3 charger?

Here are some key factors to consider when choosing between a level 2 vs level 3 electric vehicle charger:

• Charging speed. A level 2 charger provides charging up to 19-32 kW, while a level 3 fast charger supports 50 kW or higher charging. Level 3 is better if you want significantly faster charging times. 

• Compatibility. Make sure the charger is compatible with your EV's onboard charging system. Most EVs support level 2 charging, but some also support faster level 3 charging. Check your owner's manual or contact your automaker to confirm compatibility. 

• Installation requirements. Level 2 chargers typically just require a dedicated circuit and may not need extensive electrical upgrades. Level 3 chargers usually demand a larger capacity circuit, panel upgrades or other costly installation work. Consider if you have space for a charger and the means for any required installation. 

• Upfront and ongoing costs. Level 2 chargers and installation tend to cost less, typically $3000-$5000 total. Level 3 fast chargers and installation often start around $10,000 or higher. Factor in costs of the charger, installation, permits, fees and electricity to charge your EV Charging Connectors. 

• Incentives and rebates. There are more types and amounts of incentives often available to help offset the costs of level 2 chargers versus level 3 fast chargers. Check with local utilities, state and federal governments regarding available rebates, tax credits or grants for either option.
