Aunts and Uncles
I didn’t grow up with any aunts or uncles around - the closest ones lived an 8 hour drive away. And the furthest ones lived across the country - roughly 5000 kms away.
So needless to say I didn’t see any of them super often. As a kid I didn’t really know what I was missing out on.
Then I became an aunt to my sister’s children. They live a 5 minute drive away from me and I began to realize the special relationship that aunts and uncles can play in a kid’s life.
Fast forward a few more years and now I have children of my own and I’m so fortunate to have my siblings living in the same city so that my kids can have a solid relationship with their aunts and uncles.
My husband’s siblings live a few hours away, but we are still able to see them reasonably often!
My girls both love seeing their aunts and uncles - not to mention playing with their cousins… my sister loves to do art and so my kids know that going to Auntie’s house typically means a fun art project to do.
They also know that my brother loves Nintendo so when he comes over it’s a MarioKart race competition that gets everyone fired up.
Family relationships like aunts and uncles are so important as they are people who you can (generally) entrust your kids to. I know that when I drop my kids off at my sister’s place that they are safe with their Aunt. I also know that she will speak into their lives in a positive way that is different from me as their mom.
If you have aunts and uncles around who have invested time and love into you, it’s something to be very thankful for!
