Hairdressers

They say hairdressers are like therapists - they know more about their clients than anyone else.

It’s a special relationship between hairdresser and client.

In my early 20s I decided to go to hair school to become a hairdresser. I had always loved doing hair and thought I would be able to turn this into a career (little did I know the twists and turns that life would take and I didn’t work as a hairdresser for very long).

But I remember at hair school learning about the relationship between hairdresser and client. We specifically talked about how very few careers out there allow for physical contact between people - and hairdressing is one of them. Think about it - we don’t allow people that close in our personal space very often.

It’s mostly medical and paramedical professionals who physically touch their patients - and then hairdressers and estheticians. You have to develop a certain level of trust with someone to allow them that level of contact with you.

So it’s no wonder that hairdressers are like therapists - they have a special way of getting people to trust them and feel comfortable with them. They have a special way of making you feel at ease and relaxed (the good ones do anyway) - and therefore you feel safe to open up and get to know them.

So the next time you visit your hairdresser, think for a moment about your relationship - how does your hairdresser make you feel? And if you have a great hairdresser, make sure to pay her a compliment.
