The world of interior design in Calgary has undergone a significant shift over the last 10 years. Calgary interior design, once easily forgettable and one dimensional, has grown and expanded with the city. As Calgary has introduced more restaurants, boutique hotels, high-end shopping, and a diversified industry-scape, so have the patrons of these locals built and renovated custom homes. The result is that both commercial and residential interior design in Calgary have transformed, evolved, and improved.
There are many examples of great Calgary interior design. Chinook centre, which is one of the 10 largest shopping centers in Canada, has gradually replaced many of its lower-end stores with upscale shops. Along with these changes comes a more elevated interior design sensibility. Stores like Nordstrom, Saks, Montage, Moncler, Apple, and Anthropologie all have specific and elevated designs that make the mall a beautiful and sophisticated designscape.
In the restaurant scene, Calgary was once a city that had only chain restaurants with dated and generic interior design. Now, many independent restaurants have established themselves and likewise have used local designers to create unique dining experiences. Calcutta Cricket Club transports diners in both time and place, to 1940’s India. Major Tom's moody, sophisticated interior feels sensual and romantic. Lulu Bar’s mid century tropical vibe is like a mini-vacation into a warmer, sunnier place. When it comes to restaurants, Calgary interior design has a rich offering of different moods and themes.
Although hotels have suffered business-wise through the pandemic, they have managed to stay afloat. Thus Calgary has many beautiful hotels for out of town guests (and local staycations). The Fairmont Palliser, which recently underwent a major renovation, manages to perfectly bridge old and new Calgary interior design so that it feels both timeless and fresh. The Hotel Arts leaves nothing on the table in terms of design, and may be the most eclectic example of interior design in Calgary. Le Germain Hotel is a sleek and urban interior landscape, fitting with the elevated architectural landscape of downtown Calgary. These are only a few examples of beautiful hotel interior design in Calgary. Note that for the most part, the interesting hotels in Calgary are downtown; outside of that area, as it in many cities, are mostly generic chains.
Along with the elevated commercial settings, families have taken note and want the same for their homes. Particularly over the last two years as so many have spend more time at home, more and more Calgarians are seeking a home that is more chic and well put together. While whole communities have been built with combinations of builders and Calgary interior designers, older home owners have also called on local Calgary interior designers to help them re-imagine and transform their homes. This can range from a light refresh to a full remodel; either way, many communities that were built decades ago now have updated homes and interiors that elevate these communities to a new standard of design.
In summary, there are many examples of beautiful and diverse interior design in Calgary. While only a few examples in particular disciplines have been discussed here, Calgary has much to offer designers and artists. Exploring interior design in Calgary, as well as art and architecture (which have also evolved and improved!) is great for locals and visitors alike.
