LIFE'S BIG QUESTIONS

For anyone as mesmerized as I by the 1990's television series "The X-Files", the possibility of life on other planets is inevitable. Yet, so many people of our generation, the boys and girls who grew up on Star Wars and Star Trek, refuse to believe that somewhere out there exists at least one other universe housing another planet, hosting another society of beings just like (or at least a little like) us.
Twenty years ago our scientific forays into astronomy were limited to Earth's own solar system, but in years since, we are gifted with the ever-increasing discovery of other systems hosting planets much like our own. Still, it seems our human arrogance will not allow the belief that something more than our collective "Us" exists out there.
At one time the earth was believed to be flat. A few centuries later, explorers traveled thousands of miles AROUND the world, safe in the belief their ships would not fall off the face of the earth. Perhaps they were skeptical of the possibility they might find human life on the other side of their journey. But more likely, they sailed for that unchartered territory with the certainty of discovering "Life Out There".
Might we eventually do the same?
