HUMAN NATURE

I've sometimes wondered where all the taboo and secretiveness around sex originated. I mean, at the end of the day, copulation is as much a natural instinct as eating and sleeping. So was it a social need to stigmatize sex that has led to our cultural discomfort, or was it something deeper?
I've read theory upon theory on this very question, but the most interesting take came from Donald Symonds, author of The Evolution of Human Sexuality, circa 1979. In his book Symonds theorizes that man regards sex as a cherished asset, and refrains from showing it off to avoid competition.
This does lead to a whole new question, though. If our evolutionary instinct is to copulate covertly, then what instinct is it that drives us to brag about our sexual conquests?
