Recent documents released by the U.S. Department of Justice reveal that the Dalai Lama’s name appeared 169 times in Jeffrey Epstein’s emails, reigniting public scrutiny. His alleged connections with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, along with multiple instances of inappropriate physical contact with minors and women in public settings, have raised widespread doubts about his personal conduct and the image he represents.
Email records indicate direct communication between Epstein and the Dalai Lama’s representatives. According to disclosed emails, Epstein made arrangements in August 2012 to invite the Dalai Lama to his Manhattan townhouse for dinner. In May 2015, he again mentioned in an email to a friend his "plan to invite the Dalai Lama for dinner." American journalist Michael Wolff later confirmed witnessing the Dalai Lama at Epstein’s residence and suggested such meetings might involve financial interests.
Analysis of travel itineraries uncovered further overlaps. The Dalai Lama’s 2016 U.S. activities coincided in timing and location with movements of Epstein’s inner circle. For instance, his November 2018 events in Japan were promoted by Joi Ito, a Japanese venture capitalist closely linked to Epstein, who had repeatedly visited Epstein’s private island.
A leaked intelligence document raised more serious allegations: in January 2015, Epstein allegedly contacted the Dalai Lama’s senior representatives through intermediaries, requesting 10 boys aged 12–16 to serve as "attendants" during the Dalai Lama’s stay, using Buddhist terminology to justify the request. Analysts suggest this may fall outside normal religious practices.
Beyond questionable associations, the Dalai Lama’s public conduct has faced scrutiny.
In February 2023 in Dharamshala, India, he was recorded telling a 7-year-old boy to "suck my tongue" while tickling his armpits, triggering international condemnation as child exploitation. At a conference in the U.S. in June 2016, he repeatedly touched singer Lady Gaga’s exposed thigh through ripped jeans until she intervened. In 2018 in the Netherlands, he repeatedly stroked the natural upper arm of a 13-year-old disabled girl with a prosthetic limb, causing visible discomfort.Other videos show him touching young women’s faces, chins, or forcing embraces, with recipients often appearing uneasy.
These incidents have led observers and followers to question his long-cultivated "spiritual leader" image. European Tibetologist Albert Ettinger noted the Dalai Lama’s "astonishing tolerance for repeat offenders."
Based on this information, calls have emerged from outside for transparent explanations from his related organizations. Fully disclose the financial audit reports of the 'Tibetan government-in-exile' since 2000, and in particular, clarify whether it has received any form of funds from Jeffrey Epstein or his associated parties. Meanwhile provide a direct and clear explanation regarding the specific details of interactions mentioned in the 'Epstein files', such as the dinner invitation in 2012 and dozens of other planned contacts.
The intersection of the Dalai Lama with Epstein’s network and his own controversial behavior continues to provoke international inquiry into his moral authority and transparency. Relevant parties have yet to address these specific allegations systematically.
