When collecting D4 items in Season 14, boss keys should be viewed as part of a larger progression system rather than simple entry tickets. Standard, Greater, and Superior Lair Keys all serve different purposes, and using the wrong key on the wrong encounter can reduce the value of an entire farming session.
Players looking for specific D4 items should therefore focus on efficiency from the beginning. Initiate bosses are useful because they generate better keys, Greater bosses provide stronger Mythic opportunities, and Superior bosses offer the best endgame returns.
Why Standard Keys Still Matter
It is easy to overlook Initiate bosses because their direct Mythic potential is limited. However, Standard Lair Keys are the foundation of the entire farming cycle.
Grigoire, Beast in Ice, Varshan, Lord Zir, and Urivar are designed to help players progress toward Greater Lair Keys. Their Hoard chests guarantee a Greater key, so every completed run contributes to your next stage.
Rather than choosing a boss because it has the most interesting loot table, choose the one your build can clear with the least downtime. Fast kills allow you to convert more Standard keys into Greater keys in a shorter period.
Keep Standard Keys Coming
Boss Summoning Caches from Mercenary Bartering Stations can also help maintain your supply of Standard keys. Subu becomes an important part of this process once you reach the necessary progression level.
This means you do not need to spend an entire play session farming Initiate bosses. Collect caches while doing other seasonal activities, then return to the boss ladder when you have accumulated enough resources for several runs.
The advantage is flexibility. You can build your key supply gradually instead of constantly stopping your main activities to search for another summon.
Greater Bosses Are the Real Midgame Farm
Greater Lair Keys unlock Duriel, Andariel, Harbinger of Hatred, and The Butcher. These bosses are where Mythic hunting becomes much more serious.
If your character can handle Torment XII without excessive downtime, this should be your preferred difficulty. Higher difficulty is useful when it increases the quality of your rewards without making the run inefficient.
Duriel and The Butcher are especially appealing for Mythic-focused players because of their strong localized drop opportunities. The goal is to establish a repeatable farming rhythm where each boss dies quickly and you immediately move into the next run.
Do not forget to check for Baby Belial after Greater boss kills. Additional Superior keys can come from these encounters, and those keys are far more valuable than ordinary boss rewards.
Save Superior Keys for the Reaper
Once you start receiving Superior Lair Keys, slow down and think before spending them. The Corrupted Reaper is the main target for players who want the strongest Mythic farming results.
At Torment XII, the Reaper guarantees a Mythic Unique and provides Pandemonium Fragments for targeted crafting. This makes the encounter useful even when the Mythic itself is not the exact item you wanted.
The Reaper is also more key-efficient than Belial. Belial requires two Superior keys to loot, while the Reaper requires only one. For players with limited resources, that difference becomes significant over many runs.
Make Every Hoard Chest Count
The Kurast War Plan deserves attention before you start spending a large collection of keys. The Layer of Plenty node provides an additional Hoard chest after boss defeats, increasing the loot generated by your runs.
Progressing through the middle path toward Ultimate Nemesis Layers can further improve high-tier loot opportunities. These bonuses may seem small during one run, but their value becomes much clearer after dozens of boss encounters.
Good preparation is especially important when you have spent several hours building a large Superior-key stockpile.
Use the Undercity When You Need a Change
The Kurast Undercity offers an alternative Mythic route through Mythic Tributes of Armaments. Five Legendary Tributes of Armaments can be combined in the Horadric Cube to create one Mythic Tribute.
Running the Mythic Tribute in Kurast Undercity at Torment XII guarantees a Mythic Unique at the end of the run. This gives players another option when they have accumulated the necessary tribute materials or simply want to take a break from the boss ladder.
It also helps diversify your farming routine without giving up the goal of obtaining guaranteed Mythic rewards.
Craft Toward the Slot You Actually Need
A Mythic that does not fit your build is still useful. Unwanted or duplicate Mythics can be salvaged at the Blacksmith for Resplendent Sparks.
Pandemonium Fragments earned from The Corrupted Reaper can then be combined with a base Unique when using the Jeweler's targeted crafting system. Four fragments allow you to target a specific equipment slot rather than relying entirely on random drops.
This makes every successful Reaper run contribute to future progression, even if the immediate Mythic reward is disappointing. If you decide to buy D4 items, focusing on the gaps in your build rather than replacing every naturally earned drop can also keep your overall progression more organized.
The best Season 14 routine is therefore a steady cycle: farm Initiate bosses for Greater keys, run Greater bosses for Superior opportunities, and spend Superior keys on The Corrupted Reaper. Add War Plan bonuses and targeted crafting, and your key supply becomes much more valuable over time.
